Just Juice



On Thursday, whilst my sister was getting her acupuncture from @concordiaclinic, I decided to try out some of the food from the nutrition bar downstairs, and that got me speaking to the person behind all the science and magic.

So, Kev works at Concordia Clinic as a sports nutritionist and has trained with, let me just say, quite a few top-level athletes such as Natasha Jonas, Liam Smith, Callum Smith, Darren Till, Jack Turner... And quite a few MMA fighters, such as Danny Roberts and Gavin Hughes—the list is endless really. As you guys can probably already tell, he is working with some of the best prospects in the city and a lot of up-and-coming fighters too.

Here’s exactly what they do:

"I conduct a personalised nutrition plan for each person. So, when it comes to meal preps, we tailor them individually to that person because not everybody is built the same. For instance, my diet wouldn’t work for you, and yours would not work for me due to our different size and weight. Our bodies respond to food differently; we have two hormones in our bodies that respond to food. When you start your journey with us, we try to see what your goal is. We see if you want to lose weight, bulk up, or maintain a healthy balanced diet.

The two hormones mentioned before were insulin and glycogen. When you want to bulk up, you increase your glycogen because it burns fat and keeps your protein levels high. We aim to try and keep your hormones up and down all day but mainly keep your glycogen high because having high glycogen results in burning fat in your body. We aim to encourage people to have casein protein before they sleep as it burns fat overnight. Around half an hour before bed should do the trick, it will help you burn fat while you are sleeping.

In order to tailor them to suit our client’s needs, we gather information such as your RMR. This is your resting metabolic rate. So we will figure out what that is by taking into consideration your age, weight, height, and how active you are. We will calculate this together to understand how much food you need to fuel yourself while training, because naturally, if you do nothing, your body will still burn calories solely through respiration.

If you are a boxer, for instance, you will be burning an excess amount of calories, so we have to take into account what your day-to-day goals are. For example, are you doing endurance training or HIT training? This is why different plans will be tailored around different training styles to ensure you are giving your body the correct fuel. I believe it is essential to fuel your fighters correctly. Think about it like this: If you put diesel in a petrol car, it won't go. You have to fuel your fighters correctly for them to make weight. We only work with them in the fight camps to provide them with the necessities needed to ensure they will be able to fight to the best of their ability."

Kev also makes these amazing juices; let me tell you guys, they are a must! Kev is the expert, so I will leave it to him to tell you more about them:


"Here we do cold-pressed juices. Cold-pressed juices are different from smoothies. I get asked the question many times: "Oh, can I have a smoothie?" and I explain they aren't smoothies; smoothies are not bad for you, but they certainly are not the best for you due to them being made up of frozen fruit. Now, to get the smoothies "smooth," you have to blend them for around a minute, if not more, for them to be smooth enough to drink. As a result, within those minutes, you've turned all the fruits' good sugars into bad sugars. You are unconsciously destroying the fibre. However, when using a cold press juicer, everything is locked in because you only bind it for 10 seconds.

We offer a 3-day, 4-day, or 5-day detox that consists of all organic, fresh fruit and vegetables. All our recipes are off my own back; I got some inspiration from my brother, who owned a juice bar in Rise Studio called the "100 Club". My brother travelled all over the world, and doing this allowed him to take one recipe from each country. "

"I worked with a guy called George Lockheart, and I achieved my weight-cut specialist qualification... He works with Canelo, Triple G, Daniel Cormier, Cain Valasquez, John Jones, Conor McGregor, and many more. He is their go-to guy for nutrition, fight camps, etc. My first customers were Natasha Jonas and Danny Roberts. It is mad because Ben cooks the food, and I am the numbers guy. I can cook, but credit where credit is due, his cooking is amazing, and he manages to capture all the flavours. They are my recipes, and yet he cooks them better than me! He makes it spot on; we have 100% positive feedback, and all our clients have made the correct weight.

Within the next four weeks, we have some big fights coming up. We have Caolan Loughran fighting for the Cage Warriors world title in Rome, Jack Turner making his pro debut in Dubai, JJ Metcalf fighting for the IBO welterweight champion of the world on the Katie Taylor bill, Natasha Jonas and Liam Smith fighting, and not to forget Danny Robets fighting in the UFC. So, I'm sure you can imagine how busy we get."
