Secrets to self-tapes

After the COVID-19 outbreak, self-tape auditions became more common, so in this blog I will share my best tips for sending in self-tapes and, most importantly, how to be confident for your audition…

First of all, my biggest tip is to make sure your recording device has storage! This is crucial; the number of times I've been halfway through a self-tape audition and received the "iPhone storage full" notification and then cut my tape to an end is ridiculous! As a result, always make sure you have enough storage space.

Shoot your audition with good lighting, and also make sure you are shooting with your phone at a horizontal angle.

Try to have a clear background; I tend to do my auditions up against a plain white wall. This will improve your performance by giving you a more professional appearance.

Of course, knowing your lines is very crucial, and fear not if you slip up on your lines—you can just do another take!

Should your tape be anything other than a monologue, you will more than likely need someone else to read the other dialogue in the script. Make sure whoever you have chosen to read the other lines is performing them in a way that will best aid you, for example, with the correct speed, tone, and the correct ques.

Try to bring your character to life as much as possible, although this can be hard when you are only given a short extract. However, try to do this to the best of your ability.

I hope these help, I will add some more on soon, also feel free to share any of your own tips too ! AAJ x
