To be loved is to be seen: the importance of surrounding yourself with good people

This year I have been surrounded by the most wonderful people; some have always been around me, and some came in just at the right time. Those who I am entering the new year with I am extremely grateful for.

‘To be loved is to be seen’ is one of my favourite quotes, and this branch blog will delve into the meaning of it and how this can help with your perspective going forward in future relationships.

What does it mean to ‘be seen’?

For many people, to be seen, can mean different things. The interpretation that I gathered was that if someone truly understands you and sees you for who you are, then you have found the best form of love. Any person can be attracted to you, but love goes far deeper than that.

In a romantic relationship, being seen is when your partner truly understands and appreciates you for who you are. I saw this quote from a book, and to me, this is the perfect interpretation of the quote: "Many boys will bring you flowers. But someday you'll meet a boy who will learn your favourite flower, your favourite song, and your favourite sweet. And even if he is too poor to give you any of them, it won't matter because he will have taken the time to know you as no one else does. Only that boy earns your heart.”. You see, it’s not about the expensive gifts but the way a person makes you feel acknowledged.

Friendship-wise, there is genuinely nothing better than having a good gal pal who understands you, laughs with you, never judges you, and loves you the way you are, so when you find yourself in one of these friendships, hold it close to your heart and never let it go!

It is also just as important to see yourself. Accept that you may have flaws and have more than likely made mistakes, but that is okay! It makes you human; we make mistakes to learn, and failure leads to success.

More often than not, love isn’t easy; if it were, I’m sure we would all be in happy, long-term relationships. Love is hard. It comes with many ups and downs, but once you have found someone who sees you for you, you must hold them close. When someone loves you, they take the time to truly see you, to look beyond the surface level, and to understand your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

This is by far one of my favourite quotes, and this year, for me, my Christmas gifts were a prime example:

my camera - because my parents noticed how I loved to take photos

a notebook - because my Tkai noticed how I love writing

A tea spoon engraved with ‘your my best-tea’ - because Tkai, again noticed how much i love tea

New earrings- because on our first date I lost them, and so he bought me a beautiful pair to replace them

Airpods- because my sister noticed how the wire on my headphones gets wrapped in my necklace whilst running on the treadmill.

^ see each gift means so much to me as the thought behind them is so sentimental.
